I hit my breaking point and could not imagine one more day without a change. So, I bet on myself and completely shifted my perspective.
“I quit.”
With the words out there, I felt renewed conviction and, within an hour, completely walked away from my career.
When I was 19 years old, I went into property management and spent the next 18 years building my career. I started out as a groundsman and worked my way up to corporate management. Although I initially enjoyed what I did, eventually that joy faded. I was overworked and overstressed, pulling 50-70-hour weeks in a thankless role. For years, I wondered how my joyful career had changed to a soul-sucking job.
Eventually I decided enough was enough. I had to pursue something that would bring me joy! A lot of people go their whole existence doing a job that sucks their joy. I know because I was one of them. I was tired of seeing it in myself and finally took action.
As a lifelong Hoosier, I know a lot of people here and found momentum early on in real estate, which continued to build over the years. I met my wife, Rachel, while becoming a licensed REALTOR® in 2016, and she has been my biggest cheerleader since day one. Real estate provided more than a career change for me; it delivered a shift in perspective. I became mindful of my language, changing “I have to” to “I get to.” It also made me unafraid to be myself.
For my first few years as a REALTOR®, I wore a shirt and tie to every closing because I thought I had to. It seemed like an unspoken expectation, but it felt like I was dressing for a part. Eventually I recognized how unnecessary it was. You are way more likely to see me rocking a pair of Jordans with no tie on closing day now.
For a long time, I wasted energy on trivial things, comparing myself to others and worrying about what they thought of me. I do not talk to 75% of those people today, and now the only opinion of me that matters is my own. Once I decided to embrace my joy and follow fulfillment, it changed everything.
I do not dwell on problems in real estate or life, though there are plenty that pop up. Instead, I focus on mitigating damage, correcting the issue, and moving forward. In the past, little things got to me, but over time I recognized that some people would love to have my problems. Perspective is everything. Things happen in life, both good and bad, but peace of mind is priceless.
I live a life that fills me up and allows me to have amazing experiences like going to Kauai with my wife and contributing to causes I care about. It is a life beyond anything I expected and continues to blow me away. However, I never would have gotten here if I kept wasting energy on trivial things without taking that big leap. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing; follow what makes you happy
The animal shelter is my number one cause and a lifelong passion. I have loved dogs my whole life. With my mother in the veterinarian field, sometimes we had 13 dogs at our house! We could never drive by a stray without taking it home. Being able to contribute more while living a joy-filled life is something I will never take for granted. Whenever I am not working, I enjoy traveling, going to concerts and attending sporting events. The best part of being a REALTOR® for me are the relationships with my clients, who often become friends.
No matter the dollar amount, I strive to deliver the best customer experience possible. A lot of people say emotion doesn’t belong in real estate. I disagree! As your REALTOR®, your goals will become my goals. If problems arise, I will make sure you stay on track and do not get into a situation that is not right for you.
I wear my heart on my sleeve and am not afraid to have candid conversations with my clients about who I am and what makes me tick. Trust and comfort are key to our success. With my property management experience, I have unique insight into properties and their maintenance. I take my fiduciary responsibility seriously and maintain a high level of expertise in my field through study and immersion in the market. Wherever your starting point is, I am ready to move you forward. I will be ready to move as fast or as slow as your timeline requires. Once the transaction is closed, I will continue supporting your success as your lifelong REALTOR® and friend.
Sincerely,
Zach Williams
